District icons
Imaging districts
Districts were created to reflect Penn’s plan of 1682, which has remained intact. The districts
were given names that reflect
both common perception and
use.
A sixth district, University City, below right, was created several years later.
An early icon concept, to use portraits of the men for whom the squares are named, was aban- doned when it was agreed that all dead white guys look alike.
