Philadelphia and London

Of the dozen cities I’ve tried my hand at, Philadelphia and London are among the most successful,
I think, as well as the earliest.
I’ve found that I cannot work
with cities that I haven’t spent
time in—just looking at a map
is inadequate to communicate
those aspects of a city that are experientially important, not just politically important or beloved
of tourists. Of course, London’s Circle Line is not significantly
more important than its other Underground lines, but it is
simple in form, memorable, and iconic; looks great on a t-shirt,
too.
