A new transit map

for Rome

Alleviating too much information

Unlike Paris, Rome’s public
transit network is subway weak and bus strong. Bus maps are more difficult to design than rail maps, because they are surface, street, and landmark oriented. And available maps are hopeless.

This map represents an effort
to tie bus routes to important landmarks, destinations, and open spaces whose familiarity
is enough to imply the street patterns. The organization of
the index and gazetteer will be crucial.
