In 1787, the north side of Market Street, now part of Independence National Historical Park, was inhabited by a rich variety of tradesmen, shopkeepers, merchants, and ordinary citizens. As part of our interpretive work for the Mall, we marked out the property lines along the street and engraved the owners’ names and occupations.
