Transit Portals: A Case Study

In the fall of 2006 JKDA was asked to explore an overarching mark of Philadelphia rapid transit (subway, elevated, trolley, and regional rail) that would be understandable to visitors not familiar with Philadelphia's local operating entities. The initial enthusiasm for the design led to our developing consistent design systems with harmonized nomenclature and uniform ingress and egress information display for over 100 access portals in Center City Philadelphia with industrial design by Bresslergroup.

s This animation was originally created for a seminar at the University of Louisville and, although lacking Joel Katz's verbal accompaniment, should be self-revealing, all the way to its tragic denouement. The first 39 portals are expected to be on line in fall 2009.
